Philosophy:
My philosophy of judging is simple: every entry deserves my honest evaluation; every exhibitor deserves my sincere tact; every class is a clean slate; and every how deserves my hard work to chose the best for the awards. Horse shows are too expensive – to participate in and to produce – for an exhibitor not to be treated as a valued customer, for volunteers not to be treated with respect and gratitude, and for anyone to feel the judge did not look at him carefully. My main pet peeve, watching a dirty horse or dirty tack. A smart exhibitor will not make a judge have to look past a poor first impression to find merits. I appreciate hard work.
Why judge?
To be part of the solution and to see the best horses. I love watching hardworking well turned out exhibitors smile because they love what they are doing. Ad if asked, I love making suggestions after the show.
Brief Bio:
As a child I took Saddle Seat Eq lessons, but my parents could not afford the horse I prayed for daily. At 23, teaching in FL. I received from uncle Steve Calder my first horse, a racetrack reject Thoroughbred.
Moving to Texas to teach at A & M Kingsville in ’65, I discovered my FL barrel racing skills no match for Texas Quarter Horses, so studied hunt seat. Later in Fort Worth I earned colors with Hickory Creek Hunt and taught hunt seat. When I obtained my Anglo Arab, I showed Arabian shows, winning regional titles in hunter and jumper and eventually Region IX Champion 4th level Dressage horse in 1990. Meanwhile my mother gave me a purebred stallion of Fadjur/Raseyn breeding. With only me as rider/trainer, Fadareyn earned his Legion of Honor Championships in every Arabian division not requiring a cow or an obstacle. Then I began to “play”, taking reining lessons, turning a messed up filly into a winning reiner. Also, I began driving, training a half dozen driving horses, including winners in Combined Driving and my 35” mini, 1998 Pinto National Champion Disciplined Rail Driving Pony. I recently bred and showed a futurity Champion Halter gelding. For years I have promoted horses by riding or driving in parades and participating in elementary school “horses for literacy” programs.
Non-Horse Achievements:
Noted in Who’s Who in Texas, published in national and international poetry anthologies, award winning paintings, published novel Warning Shot, a novel of South Texas, Driven to Win and Unicorns Don’t Wear Shoes. |
